Three very small regions in France are allowed to produce Armagnac: - High-Armagnac - Armagnac-Tenarèze - Low-Armagnac The last limits were established in year 2005. These regions have been established according to two factors: - The soil properties, which must match a precise assessment of needs for the quality of the preliminary wine. - The climatic conditions, taking in account rain, damp etc…
High-Armagnac It represents 57% of the vineyards surfaces. The main city is EAUZE where the National Board for Armagnac stays. The “Sablo limoneux” soil (sand +silt) gives light and fruity Armagnacs.
Tenarèze-Armagnac It represents 40% of the vineyards surface. The main city is Condom, which is reputed for its cathedral and its fluvial harbor! (based on the BaÏse river, from which Armagnac were shipped, in the past, to other place in France and in the rest of the world). Its “argilo calcaire” soil (Clay+limestone) gives richer and stronger Armagnacs. They need a good ageing period.
Low-Armagnac It represent, only 3% of the vineyards surfaces for Armagnac (the rest is grown for wine). The main city is Auch (also reputated for it wonderful cathedral Saint Mary).This area has been reduced in 2005(compared to 1935) and 104 villages (out of 230) have been officially removed from the Armagnac appellation area. |
